Good things about having Parkinson's Disease

I asked several of my fellow Parkies to come up with good things about having Parkinson's Disease, turns out they have a sense of humor, too.  Here are some of their replies and a few of my own:

My husband dusts the knick-knacks in the china cabinet, I was breaking too many of them.

I don't even notice when the batteries die in the electric toothbrush, because I shake so much.

I get new dishes every few months because I break so many of them.

I got all new shirts with snaps instead of buttons.

No one thinks twice when I drink wine in a sippy cup.

I get a parking permit.

Elastic waist pants and over-sized T shirts.

They send me to watch football with the guys on Thanksgiving instead of helping in the kitchen.

I have a great excuse to not shave my legs anymore.

When I fall down, while I am laying on the floor, I check for dust bunnies under the furniture.

Someone else checks the eggs at the grocery store and picks the oranges off the fancy pyramid stacker.

I don't need a blender to make a margarita, I shake enough on my own.

I never get asked to pour the wine or champagne or even the iced tea at dinner.

No one will open the can of beer or cola I just got from the refrigerator.

I don't get asked to change diapers or feed babies.

Velcro shoes.

The young kids want to learn how I do "The Shake" dance.

I can ShakeNBake like no body else. This particular comment, inspired a new song parody:

  1. Hi Bev, this goes along with your drink maker. I told my wife to rent me out as a milkshake maker or a butter churn with out the churn. lol

  2. I love it! I am still early PD so the humour of it is yet to completely kick in but it is so good to see people with PD having a laugh at their own expense. If you cannot laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

    1. Sassy Sasha, I too am early PD and I love the humour. I laugh at myself so much now, what's to happen later in life when I boo-boo even more!

  3. My grandfather was an Orthodox priest that had it so bad. The funny think that transpired is that during church the younger priests like how he "shook" the cloth over the body & blood of Christ before communion.... He had no choice! Now many of those priests shake their cloth over their communion & it's a scream how it got started :) look for the humor in all God puts in your path :)

  4. That is too funny. Here's another one: I always get help from the "Helping Hands" workers at Wegmans grocery store. They bag, push the cart, and load the groceries in the trunk. They basically put me in the car too! Ha!!

  8. My drinks are always shaken not stirred. Chihuahuas and I have an understanding of each other. We both shake and people think we're scared, cold or hungry. So, they feed us, comfort us and offer blankets or sweaters. I am not one to turn down a free snack.

  9. My husband says having Parkingson's is saving him a lot of money. He used to buy a lot of movies, now he can't remember watching them so he can watch them again!
Also, we had a good laugh the other day (admittedly a bit dark for some) in addition to PD he has diabetes and takes a daily shot. The other morning as he was giving himself a shot his hand suddenly started shaking where it had been still the moment before! He sat there repeatedly sticking himself with the tip of the needle, cracking up laughing, saying "I can't stop!" He thought it was the funniest thing that happened in a long time.
Everyday we thank God for his blessings. We focus on gratitude. On what we have, not on what's been lost.

  10. Well, before having to give up his business due to progressing symptoms of YOPD, my husband worked nights and barely saw our kids. Now he’s a stay-at-home dad on disability. He’s there with them before and after school...it’s our silver lining.

  11. Stopped working a few years ago in the staffing industry. Let my hair grow to shoulder. When people comment on its length I tell them extreme hair growth is a symptom of PD. Always makes me laugh when people respond ...”Really”???!
